City of Temples
Jammu, often called the “City of Temples,” is the gateway to some of the most revered shrines in India. For a spiritual itinerary focusing on the region’s prominent Devi temples and sacred sites, a 3 to 4-day plan is ideal.
Day 1: The Gateway – Jammu City
- Morning: Bawe Wali Mata (Bahu Fort): Start your pilgrimage at the Mahakali Temple located inside the historic Bahu Fort. Built in 1822, this is considered the presiding deity of Jammu. The fort also offers a panoramic view of the Tawi River.
- Afternoon: Raghunath Temple: Visit this massive temple complex in the heart of the city. It is one of the largest in North India and features seven shrines, with the main one dedicated to Lord Rama. The walls are adorned with gold and intricate carvings of various deities.
- Evening: Peer Kho Cave Temple: Visit this ancient cave temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. Legend says the famous character Jamvant from the Ramayana meditated here. It is one of the oldest spiritual sites in the city.
- Overnight: Stay in Jammu.
Day 2: The Divine Ascent – Katra
- Morning: Travel to Katra: A scenic 2-hour drive (approx. 50 km) takes you to the base of the Trikuta Mountains.
- Afternoon & Night: Mata Vaishno Devi Yatra: Begin the 12-14 km trek to the Holy Cave.
- En route: Stop at Kol Kandoli (Nagrota) before reaching Katra if possible, as it is traditionally the first “darshani” point.
- Ardh Kuwari: Located halfway, this is where the Goddess is said to have meditated for nine months.
- Darshan: Reach the Bhawan to witness the natural rock formations (Pindis) representing Maha Kali, Maha Lakshmi, and Maha Saraswati.
- Overnight: Stay at the Bhawan or descend back to Katra.
Day 3: Completing the Vow
- Morning: Bhairavnath Temple: After the main darshan, a visit to the temple of Baba Bhairavnath (accessible by a steep walk or ropeway) is considered mandatory to complete the pilgrimage.
- Afternoon: Return to Katra: Head back to the base for rest.
- Evening: Local Exploration: Visit the local markets in Katra for dry fruits, copper ware, and spiritual souvenirs.
- Overnight: Stay in Katra.
Day 4: Natural Wonders and Ancient Shrines
- Morning: Shiv Khori: Drive approx. 70 km from Katra to this holy cave dedicated to Lord Shiva. The cave is nearly 200 meters long and houses a naturally formed Shiva Lingam. The trek to the cave is around 3.5 km through beautiful hilly terrain.
- Afternoon: Baba Dhansar: On your way back, stop at this serene spot known for its natural waterfall and an ancient temple dedicated to Lord Shiva and Baba Dhansar.
- Evening: Head back to Jammu for your departure.
Essential Travel Tips:
Footwear: Wear sturdy, comfortable walking shoes for the treks at both Vaishno Devi and Shiv Khori.
Yatra Registration: A Yatra Parcha (registration card) is mandatory for the Vaishno Devi trek and can be obtained online or at the Katra railway station/bus stand.
Transport: While trekking is traditional, battery-operated cars, ponies, palanquins, and helicopter services are available for those who need them.
Weather: Jammu is warm in summer, but Katra and the Bhawan can get quite cold in the evenings, so carry light woolens even in the warmer months.
